Whether a passenger, cargo ship or any other vessel, ships are particularly vulnerable to the risk of legionella.
This is due to multiple factors including:
- The amount of water sources on a ship e.g showers, sinks, spas and pools, water tanks, hvac systems, fountains, water in hoses for cleaning the ship or fire hoses.
- The potential for contaminated source water.
- Low flow rates, stagnation, biofilm build up and dead legs due to plumbing not being in use for long periods when ships are docked.
- Warm temperatures where bacteria thrive such as engine rooms and hot climates.
- Storing water for long periods.
A study on passenger ships* (ferries and cruise ships), found that out of 10 ferries and 6 cruise ships tested, 70% of the ferries and 33% of the cruise ships had Legionella pneumophila sg 1 isolated from samples taken on these vessels. Legionella pneumophila sg 1 is the serogroup most commonly responsible for the development of legionnaire’s disease in patients. The study also found L.pneumophila sg 2–14 in samples taken from 80% of the ferries and 16% of the cruise ships tested.
Why the 25 minute rapid legionella test is ideal for ships / vessels:
- Portability. The test can be conducted anywhere. It can be used onboard and is a simple to use test.
- No delays, rapid results.
- Offers an indication of a potential issue when labs are not accessible (due to the vessel being in motion and away from port).
